Does it make sense to line up a row of buttons for that purpose down at the bottom of the screen?

Landscape mode will be of no use to write from, unless we are using dictation. Or, if we have a keyboard and mouse combination plugged into the port of our mobile phone, then it's probably the best mode. Of course, we will need a lightweight and portable stand to accommodate our travelling writing style.
